Slate looks more like a matte dial where rhodium looks more like a sunburst dial. Or think of it as slate is a poorer sounding pressing of the same vinyl album. I just sold my DJ II with rhodium diamond dial that I also had for close to 10 years. To my knowledge the newer slate dial is different than the older rhodium dial was but I could be wrong. I would go for the Rhodium for three reasons: It is 3 years "newer;" the blue, which looks almost black in all but bright light, seems to wear a touch smaller as a result; and I like the blue accents vs. the red.

I know there was some discussion as to whether Rolex actually used Rhodium dust in the paint, but I don’t really care about that as much as the actual color. I have a DJ dark rhodium diamond dial and to me they look exactly the same.
