As you might expect, the new 36 Explorer (reference 124270) from Rolex feels extremely familiar to previous 36mm examples. When we went to shoot this watch we actually brought a 114270 with us so we could directly compare the two watches. So yes, the new Rolex Explorer ref. 124270 has a superior movement. But because of its slimmer and more dramatically tapered bracelet, bigger clasp, and new dial proportions, I’m leaning more toward the older Explorer reference.
The proportions of the 114270 are similar to the prior 60+ years of Rolex 36mm watches. The 124270 looks great, but it looks like a modern 39mm Rolex shrunken down to 36mm. Can't go wrong, either way. After having a couple of days to reflect, I still prefer the 124270 to the 114270. While my nostalgic side will miss the charm of the old jangly bracelet, the upgrades are worth it.The 124270 builds upon the strengths of its predecessors, particularly the Rolex Explorer 114270 and the Rolex 214270.
